Self-Activating Fire Protection for High-Risk Electrical Enclosures

Image Links West Africa Limited provides advanced Thermoresponse Temperature-Sensing Automatic Fire Suppression Systems designed to detect and suppress fires rapidly at their source. The systems provide self-activating protection, require no external electrical or pneumatic power for detection and activation, and offer simple installation, low maintenance, cost-effective protection, and reliable performance in high-risk environments.

The system utilizes a heat-sensitive flexible detection tube that provides rapid fire detection and initiates suppression when exposed to excessive heat. When the tube reaches its activation temperature, the section exposed to the highest heat ruptures, triggering the release of the suppression agent within seconds.

Direct Thermoresponse System

In the direct system, the flexible detection tube serves as both the detection device and discharge path. When the tube ruptures at the point of intense heat, it creates a discharge opening and releases the suppression agent directly onto the fire source.

This configuration is particularly suitable for small and localized hazards, including electrical cabinets, control panels, machinery compartments, and other enclosed equipment.

Indirect Thermoresponse System

In the indirect system, the flexible tube functions primarily as the heat detection mechanism. When the tube ruptures due to excessive heat, the resulting pressure change activates the system valve and releases the suppression agent through dedicated copper or stainless-steel pipework and fixed discharge nozzles.

The indirect configuration is well suited for larger electrical enclosures and equipment compartments, where multiple discharge points may be required for effective coverage.

Available Suppression Agents

Thermoresponse systems can be configured with suitable commercially available suppression agents, including:

  • FM-200 (HFC-227ea)
  • FK-5-1-12 (Novec 1230)
  • High-Pressure CO₂
  • Inert Gas Agents

The selection of suppression agent is based on the hazard classification, enclosure size, equipment sensitivity, occupancy considerations, and applicable design requirements

Typical Applications

Thermoresponse systems are particularly suitable for localized, high-risk fire hazards such as:

  • Electrical and control cabinets
  • Electrical enclosures
  • Control panels
  • Switchgear and electrical equipment
  • Machinery enclosures
  • Generator and equipment compartments
  • Specialized industrial equipment
  • Telecommunications and electronic equipment
  • Other enclosed high-risk fire hazards

For electrical enclosures, the system provides localized protection at the source of the fire, helping to detect and suppress a developing fire before it spreads to adjacent components or surrounding facilities.
